History of the XT 600
Let’s start with a bit of history and context before diving into the magnificent machine itself. The single-cylinder XT 600 saw the light of day in 1983, and it has since been released in a large variety of models.
It’s a bike that belongs to the generation before the modern hardcore enduro bikes like the Yamaha Tenere 700 or the BMW R 1250 GS.
This is a simple, light dual-sport bike. Dual meaning it can handle both road and off-road conditions. The 600 cc engine is bigger than its smaller XT siblings, which makes it more versatile.
It’s simple to work on
The next reason to get this bike is how simple it is to maintain. Now, this is obviously a big con if you’re not into maintaining your own bikes. Do not buy a vintage motorbike if you’re not ready to work on it yourself—unless you’re really rich, of course.
Maybe you want to but don’t know how, and that is the perfect place to start with this one. Obviously, I would not expect anyone to fully service the engine, but because it’s so simple, it’s not that hard a task.
Believe me, it’s not that bad, and it’s so rewarding to work on your own bike. The machines are so simple that you’ll quickly get familiar with them and know your bike to its core. Just by going through YouTube and buying a vintage service manual, you can understand every part of this bike. That’s not limited to just this model, of course, but it’s part of what fascinates me about vintage motorcycles.
The vintage Dakar style is the vibe king of today
Ok, let’s be real for a second. This style is the new hype. Ten years ago, Honda café racers were on every street corner, and though I don’t want to talk trash about café racers—because they still look cool—this is a totally different aesthetic.
The retro Dakar style is about function. It’s about taking it on gravel. It’s about mastering the maintenance yourself.
There are a ton of other models out there that can compete with the Yamaha XT series. I’m strongly biased towards Yamaha myself, but please take a look at the Suzuki DR650 or the Honda NX650. Maybe they will be more appealing to you.
All I hope for is that I’ve inspired you to get into retro Dakar bikes!
